Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at logan@covenantclassicalsf.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

We meet at Memorial Lutheran Church at 5000 S. Western Avenue, Sioux Falls, SD 57108.

We will offer Pre-K through 7th grade this year, with a long-term goal of adding grades until we are a fully functioning Pre-K through 12th Grade school. During the 2024-2025 school year, we are planning to have Pre-K, Kindergarten, 1st Grade, 2nd grade, 3rd grade, 4th grade, 6th grade (blended), and 8th grade. Depending on the families who join us during the spring, class offerings are subject to change. We still have a few spots available!

  • A collaborative school is a formal school, not a homeschool co-op.
  • A collaborative school is not a full-time, 5-day school (see above), and it demands more from parents than the average traditional or private school.
  • Parents act as the “co-teacher” during the at-home days as they help to administer the lesson plans prepared by the classroom instructor.
  • Collaborative schooling, with its emphasis on responsibility and structured time management at home, helps students transition smoothly to a college and/or work schedule.
  • Covenant Classical School is a non-profit organization recognized by the state of South Dakota that blends the benefits of traditional schooling and homeschooling into a holistic paradigm that offers a complete core curriculum (including mathematics and humanities).

No, we are not a state-accredited school. However, this is an intentional decision. The school will provide “alternative instruction” pursuant to SD CL 13-27-3. This would allow the school to avoid certain mandates and requirements that come from state accreditation that could potentially interfere with parent-directed Christian education. In some ways, this university-model school that combines classroom instruction and parental involvement will be new to our area. Parents will be responsible for filing homeschooling paperwork for each student to participate in the school (the school can assist in this process). When the time comes, Covenant Classical School will consider seeking accreditation from the Association of Classical Christian Schools.

Yes. Our development of a uniform policy is driven by a desire to create and promote an environment where dress is not a distraction to the educational process. We believe our uniform policy is God-honoring, family-friendly, and cost-effective. Our uniforms help communicate that our students are on the same team, working toward the same goal of academic excellence. Please view our uniform policy here.

Learning cohorts are small, multi-age groups of students who progress together based on skill, mastery, and developmental readiness, rather than the traditional age-graded system. Learn more about learning cohorts here.

One component to learning about the past entails that you also learn the languages of the past. The study of Latin (and Greek) is an important element of classical education as it primes students for future language acquisition as well as familiarizes students with the technical vocabularies of law, science, philosophy, medicine, and more. While considered a “dead” language by those who criticize its use in modern education, the study of Latin often makes the world alive to those who study it. Even beyond the study of Latin, classical education could be considered language-focused. Its learning is primarily word-driven, both written and spoken, rather than image-driven (pictures and videos). This makes learning an active rather than a passive exercise, as the brain has to work hard to translate symbols into concepts.
